Tool : Setting up HPOpenview NNM for external access using Natted VMNET.

Recently, I was honing my skills on SNMP, and choose HP Openview to play around. Now where do you install these software’s, obviously in virtual environment. And that is exactly what I did.
Now, my router and other stuff were not local to the subnet, where in bridged vmmet would have resolved the issue – accessing/managing devices. And as you know, for SNMP to work, external devices should be able to reach the SNMP server.
This is what I did to resolve this issue.
There is an special feature in VMware, not everybody knows about it, and I thought this place a good juncture to share this. VMware Natted VMnet provides Port forwarding feature – not advertised though.
Steps:
Edit -> Virtual Network Settings -> NAT “Last TAB” -> Edit -> Port Forwarding -> Add ->
Host port – Incoming Port “dest_port” in the traffic.
Virtual Machine IP address -> “dest_ip” “the vm’s IP.
Port -> change the port if you intend to change it, here is would remain same as “host port”.
Description – Self explanatory.
You would like to forward at least these ports to begin with, further on you can explore and add….
7501 HP OpenView Bus Daemon.
7510 HP OpenView Application Server.
22 ssh
443 https
80 http
23 telnet
162 snmp
383 OVO
Happy Journey to exploration of SNMP…. Well, last thing, pull evaluation version
